Our Priority Bills:
Paid Sick Leave: SB 2047. How many times have you been forced to go into work sick because you couldn’t afford to stay home without pay? This bill would require certain employers to provide a minimum amount of paid sick leave to employees to be used to care for themselves or a family member who is ill or needs medical care and supplemental paid sick leave to employees under certain public health emergency conditions.
Paid Family Leave: SB 2046. This bill would require the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations to establish and administer a family leave insurance program, providing family leave insurance benefits and extending the period of family leave to 16 weeks for businesses that employ one or more employees who meet the hourly qualifications.
Refundable Keiki Cashback Tax Refund: SB 2660. This bill would establish a refundable child tax credit applied to taxable years beginning after 12/31/2024. Tax credits help to offset the astronomical cost of living in Hawaiʻi, and this “Keiki Cashback Tax Refund” would deliver this economic benefit to families with children.

Relating to the Residential Landlord-Tenant Code HB 2085/SB 2127. This bill would prohibit a landlord from charging application fees for background or credit reports if you can provide them on your own. Currently, there is no cap on rental application fees meaning that landlords can charge fees for each adult applicant in the household. Some landlords on Maui are even using this as a way to profit in the midst of the increased housing shortage following the wildfires.
